AIG Women’s Open Project Overview
The AIG Women’s Open, organised by the R&A, is one of golf’s most prestigious events, first established in 1976 and recognised as one of five major championships in women’s golf. The latest edition was held at Porthcawl, Wales, a breathtaking seaside venue that added to the grandeur of this iconic tournament.
WH Silverbacks is proud to have partnered with the Women’s Open team for the third consecutive year, bringing expert event structure solutions to enhance the event experience for players, sponsors, and guests alike. While Miyu Yamashita celebrated her impressive victory this year, WH Silverbacks ensured the event’s infrastructure was every bit as remarkable as the action on the course.
The Brief: Creating Versatile Event Spaces for The Village
Our involvement at the AIG Women’s Open centered around creating covered spaces within the Village, the bustling hub of hospitality and sponsor activations. Over the years, WH Silverbacks has provided solutions for guest seating areas, resting zones, and branded activation spaces.
This year, in addition to installing two stretch tents and a truss box, we were tasked with enhancing sponsor activation areas within the Village with customised solutions tailored to iconic brands such as Nikon, Husqvarna, and HSBC.
The Challenge: Adapting to Coastal Conditions and Requirements
As with many coastal golf courses, Porthcawl presented specific challenges, including exposure to high winds and the unpredictable Welsh coastline weather. Each activation needed to balance structural stability with striking visual presentation to comply with both safety standards and sponsor branding needs.
Additionally, coordinating timber facias, graphics, and branded wall installations required precise teamwork between WH Silverbacks, sponsors, and the onsite graphics supplier.
The Solution: Custom Activations and Bespoke Covered Spaces
Sponsor Activations
- Nikon:
- A 5m x 6m truss box with chino stretch roofing for weather protection.
- Double-sided printed PVC banners for branded walling on two sides of the structure.
- Husqvarna:
- A 6m x 6m truss box with chino stretch roof.
- Timber-framed walls with applied graphics, providing a modern and durable aesthetic.
- HSBC:
- A 6m x 9m stretch tent designed to cover their golf activation area.
- Timber facias installed for graphic suppliers to apply distinctive branding.
Rest Areas in the Village
To create guest spaces that struck a perfect balance of comfort and style:
- Two expansive stretch tents were installed early on-site, offering shaded areas for attendees to relax, socialise, and enjoy hospitality.
- A 4.5 x 15m truss box for the same as above.
Installation Details
- The installations were completed across two separate weeks, allowing us to accommodate sponsor needs while ensuring the stretch tents were ready for the event.
- Despite high winds delaying our de-rig schedule, WH Silverbacks’ prepared team worked efficiently, bringing in additional personnel on Day 2 to expedite the process and meet timelines.
Impact: An improved AIG Women’s Open Experience
WH Silverbacks’ contributions at the AIG Women’s Open transformed the Village area into a vibrant, functional, and visually engaging space for guests and sponsors alike. From shaded resting areas to high-impact branded activations, every installation was designed to upgrade the event experience for attendees.
