Investment in new 9m x 70m curve marquee structure for events across the UK
The beginning of 2024 saw us invest in a 9m curve marquee structure. Spanning 9m in width stretching to 70m in length, this strategic purchase was specifically tailored for the prestigious London Marathon, secured under a three-year contract.
Its versatility lies in its ability to be configured into smaller units, ranging from 9x10metres upwards. Departing from the conventional 3m increments / bays on a marquee of this size we opted for 5 metre increments / bays coupled with a 3m leg height. Choosing to do so made the structure more user-friendly and adaptable to a diverse range of client requirements.
We also acquired roof linings designed for a floorless installation using kadar fed technology, these linings guarantee a clean and seamless fit.
We sought expert advice from Production Freight, a reputable logistics company specialising in international shipments. Collaborating closely with their counterparts in China they coordinated every aspect of the shipment.
The journey of our investment commenced with loading of a 20-foot container by hand at the manufacturers site in China. It then embarked on a voyage covering 11,166 miles or 9,703 nautical miles to reach its final destination at Southampton Docks.
Typically taking 35-45 days, the journey duration hinges on various factors including weather conditions and global events.
Departing on the 5th February, the anticipated arrival date was set for 18th March totalling 44 days. However, halfway through the journey, an unforeseen delay arose, attributed to potential issues along the route via the Suez Canal, particularly by Yemen. Remarkably, the Suez Canal accommodates approximately 51 ships daily, amounting to a staggering 20,000 vessels annually. Serving as a vital artery for global trade it facilitates around 12% of the worlds trade volume. Spanning 193 kilometres in length, 205 metres in width and a depth of 24 metres, the canal requires an average of 9-12 hours for a vessel to run its entirety.
Fortunately, our fortunes swiftly turned, and the delay was resolved, aligning with the original scheduled arrival date.
A week following its arrival at Southampton Docks, we received the delivery at our facility, marking the commencement of preparation and the unloading and packing process.
Acquiring a structure of this nature, storage provisions aren’t included. In addition to the structure itself, careful consideration must be given to storing and managing the various materials involved.

To facilitate efficient storage and transportation we had custom made steel framed stillages designed to organise the handling of each component of the marquee structure. This not only streamlines storage and stacking but also ensures that our products are well-preserved, maintaining their pristine condition for future use.
As soon as the container was lowered to the ground, we promptly removed the lock and resumed the unloading process by hand, as nothing was palletised. Every item was meticulously places on either pallets or in the stillages. With only an hour allocated for unloading, the pressure was on, as exceeding the time limit incurred additional costs. Therefore, time was of the essence, and we worked swiftly to ensure efficient handling and placement of the marquee.
With just a few weeks remaining and some final preparation to be made for this year’s London Marathon 2024, the marquee stands poised, fully equipped and awaiting loading for its journey to London.
